Drivers taking Mercer Street to I-5 could feel like they are driving on the wrong side of the road in the new year.
That’s because the Seattle Department of Transportation plans to switch all eastbound traffic from the south side of Mercer Street to the north side – the future westbound Mercer lanes that have been under construction for the past months.
In a Dec. 19 blog post, SDOT called it a major milestone.
Crews have been building the new westbound lanes in preparation for the future two-way Mercer Street. SDOT hopes to finish installing underground utilities and complete paving and sidewalks by the weekend of Jan. 6.
If that work gets completed, all eastbound traffic will be shifted over to the future westbound lanes so crews can close the south side of the street and start utility installation and reconstruction there.
